Theater Poster Design
Background: Detroit ‘67 is a play written by Dominique Morisseau. It is a period piece that takes place in 1967 Detroit, Michigan. In a time plagued with racial tensions, violence, and the Vietnam war, Detroit 67’ is a story about Chelle and her brother Lank trying to make ends meet by turning their basement into an after-hours joint, or a speakeasy/blind pig. But when a mysterious white woman finds her way into their lives, the siblings clash over much more than the family business. As their pent-up feelings erupt, so does their city, and they find themselves caught in the middle of the ’67 riots.
Concept: The concept for the poster is based on the fact that throughout the play the characters would complain about the record player always skipping, and with the introduction of the mysterious white woman that brings nothing but trouble, this poster encapsulates the play with that combination in one image that makes the mysterious woman the literal skip in their lives.
